On October 27, 1938, Lucille's father Benjamin, along with thousands of others, was deported from Hamburg to Poland. Despite having lived in Germany since 1921, Lucille's family were considered to be undesirable foreigners, and thus were subject to immediate deportation. Upon returning home in May 1939, Benjamin desperately attempted but failed to obtain exit visas for his family. On September 1, 1939, on the day that Germany invaded Poland, Benjamin was arrested by the Gestapo and eventually was sent to Dachau.
