On February 21, 1941, soon after Lucille's sixteenth birthday, the Gestapo delivered a small wooden cigar box to Lucille's home. "Benjamin Landau's ashes from Dachau. He died on January 31." Lucille's mother Sala screamed "They killed your father! God, where are you? Why have you abandoned us? And I believed in your mercy...". The ashes were probably mixed with thousands of others who were similarly exterminated.

The camp at Dachau (near Munich) was the first such camp established by the Nazis, on March 22, 1933, immediately after Hitler's assumption of power. It was intended for the internment and extermination of "anti-socials", including Jews, Communists, Jehovah's Witnesses, gypsies, and homosexuals.
