Lucille's mother Sala, 1938.
After the death of her husband, Lucille's mother Sala became withdrawn and apathetic. On October 21, 1941, Lucille, Karin, and Sala were deported to the Lodz ghetto in Poland. The terrible conditions in the ghetto resulted in Sala's death from starvation on July 13, 1942. Before dying, she beseeched Lucille to take care of Karin.

Up to 200,000 Jews were forced to live in a 1.6 square mile area in the Lodz ghetto; Lodz was the first major ghetto created by the Nazis.
